Job Title: Legal Officer III

Reporting to the Senior Legal Officer, in the Legal, Regulatory Affairs & Company Secretary Division, the Legal Officer, will be responsible for handling litigation and disputes involving the Company and supporting the management on all related legal matters concerning the Company.

 

The key tasks & duties for the position include;

 

Preparing and filing legal documents at court registries, such as plaints, statements of defenses, response to claims, appeals, list of documents and witnesses, witness statements, a bundle of documents, applications, etc. to protect the company’s interests.

 

Attending to all legal matters of the Company including advising, vetting, and drafting legal agreements and contracts.

 

Representing the Company in courts (Superior and Subordinate Courts), tribunals, and before government agencies.

 

Conducting pre-trial briefings and site visits to be fully apprised of the matter and prepare the litigation strategy.

 

Conducting research and analysis of legal matters and Interpreting laws, rulings, and proffer legal opinions to guide The company allocated to them.

 

Communicating with colleagues, judicial officers, investigative agencies, licensing authorities, and others in matters allocated to them.

 

Preparing letters and general correspondences as regards matters they are handling.

 

Engaging in amicable settlement of disputes and complaints and following up on their resolutions.

 

Overseeing the work of support staff, such as legal assistants, legal clerks, and Legal Secretaries to enable efficient delivery of services.

 

Providing guidance, advice, legal awareness, and/or training and educational programs, to improve business understanding of related laws and regulatory requirements and contractual matters as may be required.

 

Preparing reports and maintaining the records of the Company concerning the department to enable monitoring and reporting to the management.

 

Liaising with external lawyers on court cases and monitoring compliance with court procedures and requirements to enhance timely, efficient, and effective conclusions of disputes, prosecutions, and disputes.

 

Appointment Specification

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Law from a recognized Institution
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Law from Kenya School of Law
  • An advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a valid practicing certificate
  • Member of the Law Society of Kenya
  • Five (5) years post-admission experience in a busy law firm and must have been inactive litigation and dispute resolution position, commercial and company secretarial experience
  • Certified Public Secretary (K) in good standing will be an added advantage
  • A Master’s Degree in Law from a recognized institution will be an added advantage
  • Fluency in English and good writing skills
  • Proficiency in computer applications
  • Strong communication, reporting, and negotiation Skills
  • Attention to detail
  • High levels of Integrity and Ethics and the ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Drive for results and achievement

Job Title: LEGAL ASSISTANT

Reporting to the Legal Officer, in the Legal, Regulatory Affairs & Company Secretary Division, the Legal Assistant, will be responsible for handling court process and records management on legal matters concerning the Company.

 

The key tasks & duties for the position are;

 

  • Receiving and undertaking service of a court process.
  • Opening court files, maintaining records, printing, photocopying and scanning documents, closing files recommended for closure.
  • Filing Company pleadings at the respective court registries.
  • Fixing court dates and updating the court and bring-up diaries.
  • Undertaking safe custody and retrieval of court files.
  • Handling correspondence, acknowledgment of receipt of service of the court process on behalf of the Company.
  • Conducting official searches at the lands registry, Companies registry, motor vehicles registry, and government printers and attending court registries to peruse court files.
  • Registering and collecting legal documents at the relevant registries.
  • Preparing and dispatching notices, hearings, mentions, and drafting decrees and orders for filing and service.
  • Updating legal statutes as required.
  • Establish and maintain the company’s filing system to support the company’s record-keeping needs and keep the filing system up to date at all times.
  • Undertaking research when called upon.

 

Appointment Specification

 

  • Diploma in Law from a recognized Institution
  • Possess a current Court Process Server Certificate
  • Five (5) years’ work experience in a busy and reputable law firm
  • Degree or Diploma in Information Technology or Records Management will be an added advantage
  • Fluency in English and good writing skills
